London Roller Girls action portraits

Roller Derby is a high-energy, contact sport that embodies the essence of rock ‘n roll, and as far as action portraits are conserned it’s a visual spectacle like no other. For the uninitiated, it’s a whirlwind of strategy and athleticism, with two teams of five players each, including a point-scoring ‘jammer’ who earns points by outmaneuvering the opposition.

Having witnessed the raw intensity and theatrical flair of Roller Derby firsthand, I realized that the still images I captured at the bouts only scratched the surface of the sport’s vibrant aura. I yearned to delve deeper, to showcase the athletes in a light that mirrored the professional essence and individuality that the rink-side action couldn’t provide.

Enter the fierce and fabulous women of the London Roller Girls. With their cooperation, I embarked on a mission to elevate the portrayal of these athletes through the art of sports photography portraits. We convened in a North London studio, where I meticulously arranged my trusted Bowens lighting to set the stage for a shoot that would do justice to their dynamic personas.

With my Nikon D800 in hand, I worked to immortalize these Roller Derby warriors in a series of portraits that transcended the typical action shots. Each image was crafted to capture the unique spirit and style of the individual skater while maintaining a connection to the energy and familiarity of the bouts they dominate.

The result is a gallery that showcases the London Roller Girls in a new light, highlighting the glamor and professionalism inherent in their sport. I invite you to view the full image gallery and experience Roller Derby through a lens that celebrates the sport’s distinctive blend of athleticism and theatricality.
