As well as capturing comfortable indoor conferences I’m also known as sports photographer Central London Capturing mass participation events such as the Cancer Research UK London Winter Run. On 15 February at this years event it was a masterclass in resilience as over 26,000 participants battled what many called the “wettest day in Winter Run history”. Between the biting cold and the relentless, heavy rain that drenched the capital, the conditions were genuinely testing for both the runners and the gear. Yet, as a sports photographer Central London goes, there is a unique raw beauty in the way the spirit of the event shines through the grey; you can see it perfectly in the finish line photos beneath The Mall. The initial shivering at the Trafalgar Square start line transformed into faces etched with pure exhilaration and “unwavering spirit” as they crossed the line. Those final shots, where soaked finishers clutch their “best in class” medals and share emotional hugs, tell a story of collective strength that no amount of London rain could wash away.
Camera Setting Tips for Low-Light Rain:
* Shutter Speed: Aim for 1/500s to 1/1000s to freeze both the runners’ movement and individual raindrops.
* Aperture: Use your widest setting (e.g., f/2.8 or f/4) to allow maximum light into the sensor.
* ISO: Push it to 1600–6400+ depending on the overcast conditions to maintain that fast shutter speed.
* Focus: Use Continuous AF (AI Servo/AF-C) to track athletes as they approach the finish line
